Free Business Listing in Malaysia: How to Get Your Business Found Online
By Toppages
Most customers in Malaysia don't find a new plumber, workshop or restaurant by chance any more. They pick up their phone, type what they need and the name of their area, and choose from whatever comes up. If your business isn't in those results, that customer goes to someone else.
A free business listing on an online directory is one of the simplest ways to show up. It takes a few minutes, costs nothing, and gives customers one more place to find your phone number, WhatsApp, address and website. This guide explains why listings matter, how to write one that actually brings in enquiries, and how to add your business to the Toppages Directory.
Why customers search online before they call
Malaysians are almost all online now. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), 98.0% of people aged 15 and above used the Internet in 2024, and 99.5% used a mobile phone. Among Internet users, 93.0% went online to find information about goods or services.
In other words, nearly every potential customer is searching. The question is whether they find you or a competitor down the road.
What a business directory listing does for you
An online business directory is a searchable list of businesses, organised by category and location. Visitors use it to find a business that fits what they need, then contact it directly.
A good listing helps you in three ways:
- Customers can find you. People browsing a category or searching for a service in their state or city can come across your business, even if they've never heard your name.
- Your details are in one place. Your address, phone, WhatsApp, opening hours and website sit together, so a customer can call or message you in one tap.
- It supports your wider online presence. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results, and that how well-known a business is depends partly on how many websites link to it. A listing that links to your own website is one more of those mentions.
A listing won't replace your own website or your Google Business Profile, but it works alongside them.
How to create a business listing that gets customers
Anyone can fill in a form. A listing that brings in calls takes a little more care. Here's what to get right.
1. Use the same name, address and phone everywhere
Write your business name, address and phone number exactly the same way on your listing, your website, your Google Business Profile and your social pages. If one place says "Jalan" and another says "Jln", or one has an old phone number, customers get confused and you look less trustworthy.
2. Pick the right category
Choose the category a customer would look under, not the one that sounds most impressive. A car-detailing shop belongs in Automotive, and an aircond installer belongs in Home & Trade Services. If there's a closer subcategory, use it.
3. Write a description for customers, not for search engines
In two or three short paragraphs, say:
- what you do and who you do it for,
- the main services or products you offer,
- where you're based and which areas you cover,
- what makes you worth choosing, such as years in business, specialisations or brands you handle.
Use the words your customers use. If people search for "car aircond repair Penang", say that you repair car aircond in Penang. Don't stuff in keywords or copy your description from another site.
4. Add every way to contact you
Fill in your phone number, WhatsApp number (with the country code) and email. Many Malaysian customers would rather send a quick WhatsApp than call, so don't leave it out.
5. Link your website and social pages
If you have a website, add it. Add your Facebook page, Instagram or booking page too. Each link gives customers another way to check you out before they get in touch.
6. Add your logo
A logo makes your listing easier to recognise and look more established than a plain text entry.
7. Keep it up to date
Moved shop? Changed your number or opening hours? Update your listing straight away. Wrong details cost you customers and make your business look closed.
How to list your business on the Toppages Directory
The Toppages Directory is a local business directory where people can search for businesses by name, category or location, and browse by state and city. It's available in English, Bahasa Melayu and Chinese.
Listing your business is free, and you don't need an account. Here's how it works:
- Open the listing form. Go to List your business, or click Add a Listing at the top of any directory page.
- Enter your business details. Add your business name, category (and subcategory, if one fits), country, address, city, state, phone, WhatsApp number, email and a description.
- Add the extras. Upload your logo and add up to five related websites, such as your own site, a booking page or a social profile.
- Submit for review. Every submission is reviewed before it goes live, which helps keep the directory accurate and trustworthy for visitors.
Once approved, your business appears in its category and location, with your contact details and a direct link to your website. Customers reach you directly, with no middleman.
Categories on the directory include Restaurants & Food, Retail & Shopping, Health & Beauty, Professional Services, Home & Trade Services, Automotive, Education & Training, Travel & Hospitality, Events & Entertainment and Technology. Several categories don't have any businesses yet, so listing now is a good chance to be one of the first in yours.
Want more than a listing?
A listing helps people find you. A website helps them choose you.
Businesses with a Toppages website get more out of the directory. Their listing syncs automatically, so the products, services and posts they add to their own site can also appear on the directory, alongside their opening hours and contact buttons. You can see examples of this on listings already in the directory.
If you'd like a professional website that also keeps your directory listing up to date, talk to the Toppages team or see our website plans.
